Foreword of the first edition

This is a short description of the newly founded, independent Informatics department at the Technische UniversitŠt München. This description aims at being more than a mere research report, and attempts to give to a hopefully widespread public insight into computer science at our university.

After an initial introduction into the historical development of computer science, both in general and at the TUM in particular, we will discuss the changing significance which the word informatics has developed.

We will focus on a description of the teaching and research departments (footnote: The diligent reader may miss the department of Informatics XII; This is due to the ever-difficult situation we are confronted with when trying to appoint chair-holders in computer science.) The reports have been designed by the chair-holders themselves. Modifications, if any, are only of an editorial nature. The reader will also find a description of research activities which have been sponsored by special research funds or research cooperations and executed by our faculty.

We conclude with an outline of the computer science curriculum, a description of the faculty library, the computer infrastructure and a list of habilitation and dissertation theses written in the field of computer science during the last few years.

Our cordial thanks go to the authors, as well as to all those members of the faculty who have helped with the creation of this brochure.

Foreword of the second edition

This edition presents the current state of the faculty as of October, 1995. Since the first edition, the chairs of Informatics XII and Informatics XIV have been occupied. We have also included a section on publications of faculty members and a special events calender, as well as an essay on "Women at the faculty". The chapter on "Contemporary computer science", started by Friedrich L. Bauer, Wilfried Brauer and Eike Jessen has been revised and extended by Manfred Broy.
