29.11.1996: "Ehrendoktor für Wilfried Brauer"

"As the money supply for computer science [in Hamburg] was turned off in 1987, Professor Wilfried Brauer decided to go to 'where one aims always to be the best at everything' - he went to the TU München."
This appraisal of the Munich excellency was expressed by the Hamburger Abendblatt, when Brauer was decorated with the Ehrendoktorwürde of Hamburg University.

At the gala colloquium on the occasion of the award ceremony, it was stated that Wilfried Brauer in 1971 was the first Informatik professor in Hamburg and that he had founded the Institut für Informatik and later on the Fachbereich. Particularly favorable was the mention of Brauer's activity on the international stage, which falls mainly in his Munich time. In 1985, he became president of the IFIP board of the Gesellschaft für Informatik (GI), whose president he was 1977-1979, and representative of Germany in the General Assembly of the International Federation for Information Processing (IFIP), whose vice president he became in 1994 and still is. Moreover, it was pointed out that Brauer was elected in 1973 into the Council of the European Association for Theoretical Computer Science (EATCS) founded shortly before; 1985-1991 he was vice president, 1991-1997 president.
Brauer's credits for published media and symposia of GI, IFIP, and EATCS (ICALP) are widely known.

The laudatio by Rüdiger Valk cited the many and various domains of the scientific activities of Wilfried Brauer, who was recently also elected member of the Bavarian Academy of Sciences: group theory, computability, finite automata, topological automata, formal languages and complexity, Petri nets, distributed systems and theory of concurrency, artificial intelligence. The laudator also praised Brauer's talent for bringing young people to science and arousing their enthusiasm for displaying their capabilities.
